Peace building through practical skills acquisition

The project aims to reduce local youth and disadvantaged young refugees’ unemployment in Turkana County by building their practical skills. This gets to it by opening vocational training course in new polytechnic school/Don Bosco Technical Institute - near to the refugee camp Kakuma.

Local Turkana people are disadvantaged comparing to the refugees. While refugees receive daily food rations, have an access to basic healthcare and education, locals from behind the camp suffer from poverty, illiteracy and lack of opportunities. Therefore, there is a constant animosity between the community of locals and refugees, which often grows to open conflicts.

The project wants to contribute to an expansion of opportunities to obtain practical skills as well as to reconcile two communities. After course, the graduates will get mentorship during a job search in the local market. Mediation skills of trained pedagogues contribute to break the prejudice habit and bring youth together through vocational training activities.
